Experiment with things other than the usual boats and trips. Another great, less invasive option is to rent a kayak and paddle close. You alone with the vast ocean, maybe accompanied by a couple of amiable humpback whales. Suddenly, as you paddle your small boat, you feel the otherworldly presence of a gigantic whale moving beneath you. Gives you the chills, doesn’t it?

The strategic curve and coral-rich coastlines of this place attract a vast aquatic ecosystem, including these incredible species. Staying out all night? During the stillness of night, listen to the enigmatic melodies sung by our enormous marine companions.

Also, the rocky shoreline of La Perouse Bay should not be overlooked. Whale watching is personal and completely unique here, amid ancient lava flows. Your grandma would be absolutely correct in saying that it’s a site with character. In case the whales don’t appear as expected, it’s also a great spot to work on your pirate voice.

Get off the main road the next time you visit Maui for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. After all, even the most reserved marine animals find amusing ways to congregate in some charming island spots.
